You said the fans turned on, so obviously it told the coolant temp sensor gave it's value to the engine control module.If you were working with a 2 pin temp sensor then your vehicle either has a second temp sensor for the engine control module or passes the value over the can bus to the gauge cluster.Since the gauge AND the fans don't work then

Cylinder head temp sensor or coolant temp. The cylinder head temp sensor should be near the alternatior and the coolant temp sensor should be right on top of the thermostat housing.
